How I Use It
I used Flocabulary in our computer lab setting and with our 1:1 carts in the classroom. I used the free material with the students as a review tool with all levels of learners in our classroom. The students were highly engaged and showed an improvement with overall reading and vocabulary scores. I decided to dive deeper and used some of the free graphic organizers and lessons to support our Tier 1, 2 and 3 words from our text. It provided me another way to scaffold and differentiate vocabulary across all grade levels across all content areas. I also used it as a collaborative tool to get students to share their ideas and learn from each other.
My Take
Flocabulary is one of those strategies that comes with a "natural hook" for your students. They say that music is the universal language and when you combine music with your own "mind map" of rhyming words, mastery occurs. Combing music with tier 1, tier 2, tier 3 words is an excellent strategy to keep your students engaged and ultimately giving your students permission to "own it". Many of my students created authentic word walls with their vocabulary lists as well as Podcasts emulating Flocabulary's approach. Marzano research suggests that teachers should provide multiple exposures to words by using inventive games and other activities. This tool should be added to your tool box. After the free trial, you will be asked to purchase a plan but the company offers a couple of different plans that's affordable. In my opinion, check out the free trial and see if it would work for your students.
