How I Use It
Flipgrid can be used to further explain projects/ personal understandings around material. It is great because some students prefer verbally discussing their ideas as opposed to strictly writing. By talking out loud you can also their their thinking process and their jumps from ideas and connections. It also allows them to work on the skillset of public speaking, but into the camera so it feels more low stakes. Some students mess around with the available filters and frames so their faces aren't really showing, but that seems to be okay if we mostly want to hear what it is that they have to say. This would be a problem if the task was to also present/show an assignment they were working on, on camera.
My Take
I love Flipgrid because I think it is a great resource to use to switch up presenting material/ ideas in a classroom setting. Students can record themselves presenting, and other students can view and comment on these videos. It's a great way for students to share work, without it taking up several days in class to get through everyone (as this can be assigned as homework). I have noticed that ELL's also enjoy the app, since sometimes their literacy in speaking is stronger than their literacy in writing. It is interesting to see how in depth students are willing to go with self recording, and to hear bits that they maybe wouldn't share in the classroom. Security is great because you need a class code to get in, educators can manage the comment settings, viewing settings (educators can be the only viewers, or whole class can view each others), and students love the creativity aspect of applying filters and frames to their videos.
