How I Use It
I use this product to put students in small groups and work together. It especially helps with building respectful digital communication. Some students who might not talk in class will talk digitally in the small groups. I also use it to make self-directed lessons that students can do outside of class. I build courses that I can duplicate to use in more than one year and to add gamification aspects of levels of learning and badging for celebration.
My Take
Overall, I think Edmodo is an exceptional resource for an online learning platform, especially if your district does not have something in place. It is great because teachers own their platform not matter what a district changes, so teachers won't lose their work. It is especially helpful to build respectful dialogue with students. It recently added advertisements to keep it free. I understand the need for it, but I would prefer it to not be necessary. It makes my teaching better because there is a network of teachers I can turn to for help in creating lessons, emotional support and encouraging my creativity. It also has free teaching resources that I can use as well as professional development opportunities. I recommend it to teachers all the time.
