How I Use It
Edmodo is an education based social media site that looks similar to Facebook which really draws students' attention. Students can join the classes set-up by teachers in order to accomplish multiple tasks. Students can post anything and respond to others in the class (which can be monitored and policed by the teacher). Teachers can also post assignments, polls, discussions, and communicate individually with students. I use it as a way for students to blog about what they are reading (whether it be a class novel or one of their choosing), and other students and read and comment on the blogs. I also use it as a way for students to upload digital assignments like a movie poster they have created online, a PowerPoint of a Greek Mythology museum exhibit they curated, or even just a Word document. This way all the assignments are in one place for me to grade and for other students to see and comment on if they choose. Edmodo also has a "backpack" feature which lets students upload work from school or home that they can then access anywhere.
Edmodo is great online tool to help build a community within the classroom while also having great functions like posting and grading assignments. Students love to get on and play with it since it looks so much like other social media they use everyday. They also know I'm monitoring what they post which forces them to play nice and be positive with each other as opposed to the online bullying they are so used to on other social media.
