How I Use It
As a math teacher, I have used Edmodo a few different ways: 1) I have used Edmodo by updating the students on assignments coming up. 2) I have asked the students to upload videos/online projects they have created onto Edmodo in order to share with their peers. In addition, the students would respond to their peers with praise and/or constructive criticism, allowing me to evaluate their ability to communicate. 3) I have shown the students videos on various ways to solve a problem, and asked them questions about those methods. Are both methods correct? Why or why not? This allows me to evaluate their mathematical reasoning and their ability to critique the methods of others. 4) I have shown the students a video to watch for homework, and then assigned a quiz to take afterwards in order to monitor understanding before coming into class. Edmodo is diverse and an exceptional tool for the classroom that the students are truly engaged in.
There are plenty of people who do not use Facebook or other forms of Social Media properly, so why not teach our students how to use it correctly, so they're not those people? Edmodo allows me to update my students on assignments and tasks that need to be completed, as well as ask them rich questions and have them respond appropriately. It teaches them content as well as 21st century skills, making this a powerful tool.
