How I Use It
I use it in 4-6th grades to model Internet Safety and Netiquette. I am also using it as my own social network (I was on this great webinar last night about a professional group to join) and have encouraged other teachers to join me as well. Further, I am using it to extend the reach of my class time by using it for book club and code club which are extra curricular activities.
I was very hesitant about Edmodo at first.....a Facebook like site for kids and I need to be the police officer? Not really something I want to sign up for. But the more I thought about it, I know that my 9-12 year olds are lying about their age and signing up for Facebook because they are eager to have a site that allows them to communicate with friends. Edmodo is a MUCH better safer choice. When set up correctly, with clear expectations and teaching it can be a WONDERFUL tool to model what we preach about internet safety. Now that I have it set up my students LOVE it and can't wait to use it. I have had little problems and actually enjoy reading some of their conversations and I am getting to know my students better.
