How I Use It
I use Edmodo in my fifth grade 1:1 classroom as a way to stay connected both inside and outside of the classroom. I have used it in a variety of ways, one being a place to have short class discussions by posting threads on the wall. Students also use Edmodo to turn in digital work in our 1:1 classroom. Edmodo provided a great place for students to submit projects, especially when files were too large to email. Teachers are able to provide feedback and assign a grade for assignments. This feature is similar to an LMS (learning management system). Google Drive is also an integrated part of Edmodo, which is a definite perk for Google Apps for Education schools. My students could easily access their documents, presentations and spreadsheets that were created in Google Drive and submit them directly through Edmodo.
Edmodo is a great way to allow students the opportunity to work with a safe and trusted social-networking site, while still maintaining the elements necessary to be meaningful in the classroom. They can post to discussions, access links or videos, submit assignments, and much more. Parents can also sign up to receive alerts for their child's account, which is great for keeping a strong digital home-school connection. Edmodo is a free, user-friendly, simple way to bring safe, social media into your classroom. Definitely worth giving a try!
