How I Use It
This app/website helped us gamify a Spanish Language classroom. The students Created accounts and followed each other. Duolingo gives the student many quizzes and they get scores based on their results. There are different types of questions, multiple choice, short answer, listening and speaking. The students always have a visible leaderboard, they can see how the teachers and other students are doing. The program is run either through an app or a web browser. The students can log in from anywhere and update the scores. The students that took the most quizzes rose to the top of the leaderboards. We sued as a starter or reward in Spanish Class. It helped motivate the student when we posted leaderboards int he classroom.
My Take
I really liked Duolingo and so did the students. Most of the Middle School Teachers created accounts and joined in the competition. The quizzes were not necessarily aligned to my curriculum. There were definitely questions that were at higher level, it was interesting to see kids try to gain the knowledge themselves. This is something that I hope remains free so we can use it in future school years.
