How I Use It
Cosmeo is a subscription based service for children from kindergarten through high school. to use at home. It is made by Discovery Education and has over 30,000 video clips, tutorials ton of academic games and content aligned to state standards , as well as activities and facts for the day. The cost is about $10/month, but very worthwhile. Cosmeo has access to thousands of videos and clips from Discovery and their parent company, United Streaming that can be easily searched by entering a few keywords. The majority of topics are science and social studies based, although there are plenty of math , English , health, art and music activities. There are many fun and educational Flash based games to learn more about the human body, chemistry, and programming skills. Overall, we noticed some of the games worked better on Windows than Mac.
My Take
Cosmeo is an extensive collection of free games and videos that could be found outside of this website, however, it is very convenient to have these child friendly resources right at your fingertips. Students can organize information they want to keep into a folder, which is helpful when they are conducting research or for future reference. In addition, Cosmeo lets the student explore at his or her own pace and with their own pathway of interest. As a teacher, I would have liked to see a report of what students did on Cosmeo and their scores, as a way to see if the resources on Cosmeo were a credible influence to improving their achievement in my classroom. I also would like the ability to assign certain topics as a way to reteach, provide practice or even test prep for particular students.
