How I Use It
Comic Life allows students to use pictures they have taken, drawn or found on the internet to create a 'comic book' storyline. My students use it in the art classroom to create original comic book stories, to creatively demonstrate how to use a media, and to show what they have learned about an era of art history. I have seen my students work with this software for every class they have across the board. From English, to math, to electives and history. This software seems to be most effective in for checking student understanding of a concept that has already been taught. By having students tell the lesson or steps back to you in comic book form, the teacher can easily check for understanding and students can demonstrate knowledge of how to apply the lesson to other aspects of the subject in a fun and creative way. It is is a little limited in layouts and choices of style, but creative students can easily overcome these obstacles through the combination of photographs, collage and user created drawings and artwork. The only real limitation is the users imagination.
My Take
My students have used this software for 6 years. I teach high school, so for some of them they have been using it since 4th grade. They are experts at it now. Comic Life allows students to express what they have learned in all the different aspects of STEAM in a creative way that makes it fun for them so that they don't mind doing reinforcing work where this works best.
