How I Use It
I use a couple of the Hour of Code videos as a hook to inspire students at first. The videos show snippets from Valve founder, Gabe Newell; NBA Superstar, Chris Bosh; founders of Facebook, Twitter, and of course Bill Gates. Then, I let the students play the LightBot game on the Hour of Code. This is very well like by students. It does not matter what type of learner they are, ALL of my students have been successful with this game. They energetically help each other. This is one game that gets those group of students that don't speak or hang out with each other to actually start communicating! Sooner or later, they get to a point where they get stuck and when they ask me for help, I ask the class who has completed that level a student needs help on and that gets the ball rolling with students getting up and walking across the room to help someone.
LightBot makes all students feel successful. I have had numerous special needs students play LightBot on their free time and tell others about it and help them along. It teaches students sequence, loops, procedures, and debugging.
