How I Use It
I have used Hour of Code from Code.org two years in a row. I set up classes for all my sixth grade students. Code.org generates a class code that students enter when they create their accounts. It makes it easy to track student participation and progress. For those children who have a hard time keeping track of their log in credentials I sometime utilize the secret word option for which I manually enter students' names and they only have to remember two words. Either way, it is easy enough to keep your students plugged into this site. After students complete their hour of coding they each earn their own individualized certificate of completion! For advanced students you can even set them up to access the entire 20 hour curriculum. I further motivate those students both by letting them know they might be eligible to win some Code.org swag, as well as potentially earn DonorsChoose.org gift cards for the classroom.
My Take
Code.org is such an awesome way to introduce students of all levels to programming. I like that it offers several options and makes it easy for students to explore a few different platforms. It's extremely engaging and I have yet to see any students lose interest. Many of the activities are very challenging and it affords students the opportunity to discuss their solutions with each other. I use this site as a jump off prior to bringing them into Scratch or Bootstrap. The drag and drop format is also a great reinforcement for students being introduced into robotics, as blocks such as loops and conditionals really show how feedback control is a vital part of programming autonomous machines.
