How I Use It
Code academy is an interactive tutorial on programming for beginners. I was searching for a program to use at home to introduce some of my family members (mixed ages) to coding as an after school activity. In reviewing the web site design module I thought that even though it was self-paced it seemed to move through the content very quickly. The practice seemed a bit too simple and I’m not sure how much a student would actually retain. It does track learner progress and provides points and badges for lesson and unit completions which helps with engagement. The lessons are well organized and build on one another. It would work on an individual basis depending on student interest.
Overall, the content can be a bit much to take in all at once, however the interactive features are engaging and the immediate feedback helps to keep learners focused. The explanations were clear and simple, a benefit considering that coding can seem complex to a beginner. I don’t see this program working well with younger students due to the nature of the content and the interface.
