How I Use It
The only time I used this with kids was at home with my own pre-teen/teen kids and with 5th grade students during the Hour of Code week. A middle school reading level is required. I myself have gone through the HTML, CSS and Javascript track classes to evaluate it for student use and would recommend it for individual rather than any sort of collaborative work.
My Take
Good free intro. to web skills (HTML, CSS), ok for Javascript. CodeAcademy has some good modules, but some lessons are not very intuitive. It also doesn't allow for much individual creativity. It requires online access and a login (unlike Scratch and Processing, which you can download) but it does set cookies once you are logged in so that student progress is saved. Lessons are occasionally buggy, but since it is free and has lots of badges for incentivization, it's still a worthwhile tool for introducing kids to webdev and programming.
