How I Use It
ClassDojo is a free and easy to use behavior management tool. Dojo encourages and reinforces the positive behaviors you want to see in your classroom while discouraging those you don't. It also allows you to track behaviors and provide instant feedback to students. Although it gives you the option to utilize some preset behaviors, teachers can easily add their own expectations into the program. Allowing your students to help create classroom expectations is a great way to increase student motivation and buy-in! Parents can easily join ClassDojo classes when provided with a printable password. Once enrolled parents can see their child’s progress, message the teacher, and see posts to the class wall. Dojo also offers great lessons that teach students to self-regulate and includes other features such as random grouping, a timer, noise meter, and more!
My Take
My 3rd graders love this app! We use ClassDojo every day! They have quickly picked up on the positive and negative behavior choice noises which encourages them to stop and think each time they hear it. They are constantly asking to see their points and to post updates on our class story. We also use Dojo as an incentive program; each Friday students can trade in their Dojo points for various classroom rewards. In our room we reset points on a weekly basis, but you could easily reset points daily to give students a fresh start. Dojo has also been a great resource for me to identify reoccurring behaviors within my classroom and as a parent communication tool. I also like that I can access the app from my phone, laptop, or desktop computer and the points sync regardless of where I am. I use almost every feature of the Dojo toolkit, especially the timer, directions and random grouping. We also watch many of the Dojo lessons as they align with or support the virtuous language used at our school. Overall, I’d recommend ClassDojo to any teacher looking for a fun, engaging way to support behavior management in their classroom.
