How I Use It
ClassDojo is a classroom management and home communication tool. I have used it for a couple of years and I totally dig it. Like any management tool, it needs to be customized for you and tweaked so that it works best in your classroom. Every once in a while there have been glitches, but they usually get addressed quickly. The kids love the monsters,which can be customized when students log in to their own accounts. I display the students' avatars on my smartboard and reward them (positively and negatively) frequently throughout the day (or in my class, the periods). It dovetails very well with our school-wide discipline program. I wish that ClassDojo could be linked somehow with a gradebook system as well, so parents had a one-stop place to check on student academic performance and behavior. The app for my iPhone is great, because parents can text me through it, so I can field questions as they arise. FREE -- it's free! That's HUGE!
My Take
ClassDojo rocks! At a certain point, you may find that you need to supplement it with an external reward system (like x number of ClassDojo points earns a free homework pass or something like that), because, like anything, student motivation can start to lag. My biggest wish is that more of my students had internet access outside of school so that they and their parents could interact with ClassDojo more often. ClassDojo tops out at middle school; maybe having more "mature" avatars to choose from would be enough to hook high schoolers.
