How I Use It
Classcraft is evolving towards a Learning Management System paradigm from its original Behavior Management initiative. I am finding myself transferring more and more of the tasks that I would typically present students on my Moodle / Edmodo / Google Drive accounts onto Classcraft with the new modules that are being presented.
I have typically used Classcraft for bonus assignments in the past, since the students were really interested in seeing their characters get more advanced. I have also chosen to use the behavior management tools such as experience, gold and health point reduction for formative assessment purposes. The Boss Battles are great for review before a quiz, and gets the students want to be ready and prepared even more than the quiz itself.
I have used Classcraft as a learning management tool rather than a behavior tool. It really worked great for me as I used it for academic purposes. Students definitely respond well to receiving recognition in forms of experience or gold when they do well on a formative assessment. Dealing damage could difficult for certain students, especially in public, so I had integrated an intermediate die-roll element that would help students not be turned off completely and make it feel more game like. The same could be thought about for the consequence system. Overall, Classcraft is a completely customization educational environment, that is as good or weak as the system that you would like to build around it. I advise starting to use it with a trial group first, and ironing out how you really would like to benefit from it.
