How Can Teachers Use It?

CK-12's Life Science module provides resources for more than 250 short topics organized under nine easily perusable themes (such as Plants). Most topics include a brief article (often with related links, video clips, and review questions) as well as associated media. This connected content is the highlight, especially the Real World Applications, which includes videos and articles on subjects like underwater microscopes, oysters saving NY harbor, and rat basketball. Use these as class openers to jump-start kids’ engagement. Or, with free accounts, you can assign content directly to kids.

In general, you'll find the readings here aren't informative enough to give kids the whole picture. Nonetheless, they can be engaging at-home introductions in a flipped-classroom setting, or effective in-class supplements. If they’re logged in, students can highlight text and type notes, which should provide an effective springboard for class conversations. Teachers should note that the Next Generation of Science Standards correlations listed are for related information, and not the tasks that meet the standards.
