How I Use It
I use it with middle school students for science and math refreshers. After discussing a concept, I have students individually or in small groups review the videos and either take the practice quizzes or do something else with the material (reflections in an interactive notebook, for example). After they've become familiar with the series, I'm also planning on having students plan their own videos based on the characters.
I love BrainPop--there are many different concepts across subject areas for kids in elementary and middle school. The kids like the videos, as they're relatively short, colorful, engaging. The visual style is great for kids who are not strong readers and also for visual learners. They're also a bit cheesy/funny, which helps kids enjoy what they're watching. Though not great for beginning a concept, the videos are good reinforcers and there are quizzes that kids can use to practice. The license is a bit expensive, but for a school or district, it's worth it.
