How I Use It
(7th Grade Life Science) Introduction to Content: Often a BrainPOP video is the first introduction to material that I present to learners. It is engaging, accurate, and often addresses misconceptions about the topic. Many times I will even show a video twice due to their short length and have students focus on different areas each time (i.e. vocabulary, visual representations, connections to previous content, etc...). Extension: Along with the videos, each topic has extention activities that can be done with the whole class, small groups, or by individuals looking for more on the topic. For example, after watching the video on human population growth, I will have my students read about the 1 Child Policy in China through the provided BrainPOP activity.
My Take
BrainPOP offers an incredible amount of content for a school for its price. I would recommend looking into school or district funds to purchase a site licesne for an entire building instead of doing the process on your own. I have seen great success when students see these videos throughout the school instead of just one classroom. Grants would be another option, as not a large sum of money is needed. Here are a few other high points that I have experienced with BrainPOP... ~ The content is spot on. In the one instance where my students and I spotted an area in a science video that was confusing, not "wrong", but confusing, we gathered up evidence and email the compony. They had the animators change the video before the end of the school year! My kids were thrilled. ~ I use the captions feature every video we watch. It helps student see the words that they are hearing, often for the first time. ~ Short, interactive quizzes after the video are a great way to guage understanding with the class. ~ Students can have their own accounts to explore the content that they are interested in. ~ The site now includes a variety of educational games that have been developed and vetted by universities for quality. I can attets to the value of those present in the science curriculum. If you are interested in what BrainPOP is like, simply head to their website. They have a free video of the day that will show you what it's all about!
