How I Use It
My department and I use Brain Pop Jr for our health and wellness curriculum. Main topics that we use brain pop for are food groups and nutrients/nutrition, disease prevention, beverages, caloric intake and expenditure, and nutritional planning. There are a few other areas within our scope that we use the site for, but these are the main areas. The video's are very age appropriate, and give a great explanation of the topic covered. Additionally, the quizzes and games that accompany the topics are fun and engaging and a great way to check for understanding in an informal way. The site is very easy to use and contains multiple disciplines in one site (its not just for science or health, but multiple areas). I would recommend Brain Pop Jr. to any colleague and educator.
My Take
Brain Pop Jr is a fantastic resource for multiple disciplines. My department and I mainly use the health and wellness disciplines with our students. The video content is very age appropriate and covers many areas of our health and wellness curriculum, such as food groups and nutrients/nutrition, disease prevention, beverages, caloric intake and expenditure, and nutritional planning. The interactive quizzes and games are fun and exciting and hold the students interest and focus. The site also provides lesson ideas for almost all areas, in addition to fun little components such as "pop a joke, word find, write about, and draw about it" activity resources. I have not used these other components as much as the video's and quizzes. It is nice that a difficult and easy quiz is provided. Some areas that I would like to see different is to have a platform that is similar to the "Kahoot" app where multiple people can be logged on at once to engage in the quiz, and answer on a personal and interactive class level. This is not a "make or break" for me but it would be an added perk! This is the first year that I have used Brain Pop Jr. so I am not sure how often they update their content. Considering I teach Junior Kindergarten through fourth grade physical education I see my students for possibly six years so updating/new content is essential for me and my department. I value Brain Pop Jr and what it does as a teaching tool and resource. The large content and discipline areas the site covers is fantastic, and has sparked ideas for cross curricular lessons within our lower school. The amount of resources received for the value of the subscription is great. I would recommend Brain Pop Jr. to any educator!
