How I Use It
The Brain Pop website sets up some great arts and music lessons. There is a fee for some of the lessons, but others are free. I like the website, but wouldn't use it in place of my curriculum. I think it would be great to use for lesson plans, enrichment classes in the arts, or for student self paced discovery lessons. The videos on the site are great for students that want to gain background knowledge about different genres of music. I particularly liked the lesson on the Harlem Renaissance.
I think the site would be interesting to students that operate at higher levels. I think my lower level students and students with learning differences would get lost in the shuffle of the site however. The layout is a bit busy and I think it might be distracting to some students. I think I will use the site with some of my enrichment groups or as a sub plan. There were several of the games and extended activities that were linked to the teacher lessons that did not work. This would be frustrating for a student or substitute, so I would suggest running the program before leaving it for student self guided work or before you count on it for a lesson.
