How I Use It
Using Book Creator in my international school has enhanced my teaching and enabled students to be so much more creative and imaginative in how they present their learning. During a PSHE lesson on Kindness my pupils created their own Kindness book, explaining what kindness means to them and how they can perform everyday acts of kindness. Some also wrote stories about an act of kindness preferring to use their imagination in a different way. They could upload photos to illustrate their writing and decorate their pages in appropriate ways. The creative options and features are endless. These books could be read aloud using the Read Aloud function or read by the students or teacher. Feedback from their peers was useful for editing later.
I have also used Book Creator as an assessment tool whereby students uploaded screenshots of a Minecraft project they were involved in. I was able to see whether they had accomplished certain objectives and they enjoyed presenting their work in a creative and imaginative way, writing text or speaking and using the microphone to explain their choices where appropriate.
The Read Aloud function is great in an ESL environment such as my school. They can learn and practise correct pronunciation in a way that appeals to them while using their own texts.
Book Creator is a great and innovative teaching and learning tool. I wish I had started using it as soon as it appeared on the market. It contains many features and options to personalise students´ work, it gives them choice so that they feel in charge of their own learning. Collaborating on books also gives them a chance to work as a team and discuss the choices available. I think having students write their texts before on paper ensures they continue to practise their handwriting, plus editing and peer marking can be done too. Then when typing up in Book Creator they can concentrate on the layout, uploads, videos and any other creative effects they wish to use. I like the way you can see a "book shelf" view of all the books created for one topic or class, it makes it easier when you want to choose one book in particular. Overall, an excellent tool for all age ranges and abilities and one that I will continue to promote.
