How I Use It
I used a few of ABCYa's online math games to review basic concepts with my 5th grade students during whole class competitions. I generally pitted the boys against the girls in math bingo, and for this narrow purpose, the site was perfect. The site is not designed for this purpose, as it does not feature teams or a change of turns, so those aspects of the competition I had to manage on my own. However, the students generally enjoyed the game and it was easy for me to squeeze in a round at the end of the day if the students behaved themselves.
The biggest advantage of ABCYa is how easy it is to get started. There are no instructions required, no sign in required, and the built in timer is helpful as well. There are many games available for the students to explore, but most get repetitive quickly. It would be nice to have some more difficult problems available, as even the "Hard" questions in the Grade 5 category were rarely a challenge for my students. I would definitely recommend ABCYa for certain uses, including independent review. It would be nice to have a way to block the annoying ads, but it doesn't affect the quality of the games.
