How I Use It
I would use the game Base Ten Fun with first graders as we transition into using coins. I would introduce it to the whole group, having students use the interactive white board to explore the three levels of difficulty and the three modes offered. I would ask them to notice and describe the differences. One mode gives the number as a symbol, which the student reads and then makes with virtual base ten blocks. Another gives them the number orally. The first two modes include a number line with a moving value indicator. The third option shows amounts of blocks and the student uses a keypad to enter the value. I would ask them, "Which game seems the easiest to you? Which game seems the hardest? Why?" After this introduction, students would play independently. I would monitor their understanding by observing them as they played. I could provide scaffolding for students who continually make errors.
ABCya.com provides interactive games and activities for students in grades K-5. Teacher-created, the activities are grouped by grade level into categories: Letters, Numbers, More (Art, Shapes, Keyboarding, etc.), Holiday, and Just For Fun. Many of the activities can be used in a whole group setting with an interactive whiteboard to teach or review a concept. Students also enjoy using them for independent practice. Many are available as Apps for mobile devices. The site does contain some advertising which allows it to operate without subscriptions. The games share similar formats, allowing even Kindergarten non-readers to play independently. Designs include colorful animal characters with playful audio and animation. Kindergarteners can practice placing alphabet blocks in order or play bingo using number recognition. Examples for middle elementary students include playing with synonyms, practicing computation and designing a vehicle. Fifth graders can create word clouds, practice percents and label a skeleton.
