Let me introduce myself. My name is Shad Wachter. I graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. I started my teaching career as a music teacher and band director at Fallston Middle School in Harford County, Maryland. While there, I attended Loyola College in Maryland and received a Masters of Education degree in the field of Educational Technology. My wife and I moved to Western Pennsylvania as our family grew and I became the Technology Assistant for South Fayette Elementary School. Wanting to remain involved in the arts, I co-sponsor the Performing Arts Club. I will also sponsor the after school Scratch Programming Club. Last year, I obtained the position of Technology Literacy Teacher and Innovation Integration Specialist at South Fayette. This past summer, I enjoyed teaching students about video production during our first annual Summer STEAM Camp. I also taught Scratch during Little Lions Academy. The highlight of my summer was presenting at MIT all the wonderful things South Fayette does to teach computational thinking. I learned so many new things to bring back to our students at the [email protected] conference.
I enjoy working with students to develop technology skills that they will apply in their other classes and the real world. My students participate in project based learning experiences to become fluent in the use of technology. They practice keyboarding skills, learn basic programming concepts, and create multimedia presentations in a variety of formats. Additionally, I strive to instill in my students the importance of becoming good digital citizens. Our cyber security program is largely influenced by Common Sense Media resources.
