I am in my 15th year as Founding Director of the California Writing Project site at the University of California, Merced. My previous experience includes teaching high school English for Clovis Unified School District for 25+ years and serving as Writing Assessment Resource Teacher for 7 years. I also taught Freshman Composition courses for the English Department at California State University, Fresno for 2 years, and Literacy in Content Areas for Secondary Credential Candidates in the School of Education at California State University, Fresno for 12 years.
My experience with the California Writing Project began in 1982 when I was selected as a Fellow in the San Joaquin Valley Writing Project at California State University, Fresno, where I served as Associate Director and Consultant. I conducted Inservice Programs throughout the San Joaquin Valley for elementary, middle, and high school teachers. My areas of expertise include teaching writing as a process with emphasis in revision strategies and demonstrating the reading-writing connection. I have worked on National Writing Project and Statewide committees and Scoring teams where I developed expertise in Holistic Scoring, Analytical Scoring, and Portfolio Assessment.
In addition to my Secondary Teaching Credential, I have an MA in English with an Emphasis in Composition and a Doctorate in Education with emphasis in teaching writing. My Dissertation involved the writing development of 3 Hmong high school boys over a 4-year period.
