About Me

“We either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same.” - Carlos Castaneda

I teach high school English, one of the toughest jobs on the planet. Working with students, faculty, administrators, parents, and school staff, advising clubs, and managing a paper load of over 150 student writers is enough to burnout anyone, but then add in the other jobs of caring for family, cooking, cleaning, laundry, shopping, helping with homework, caring for an aging parent, designing curriculum, publishing articles, attending and presenting at conferences, and reading/researching pedagogy in an attempt to stay abreast of best practices in education, and you'll understand the need for strength...and this is only some of what English teachers, most teachers do in a day. My days have changed, however. I work smarter now. That overly busy person used to be me, living the life I chose, weaving in and out of my roles at light speed. I haven’t figured it all out yet, but I have learned to take Castaneda's words to heart. I now find strength in simplicity, slowness, and silence. I have learned to take long walks and short naps - especially since making myself strong will take the same amount of work as making myself miserable. Finding ways, such as using technology as a tool to enhance and simplify my teaching, and working with some of the best teachers in the nation are but two of the ways I help make my teaching-life strong.
