Into my 28th year of teaching, I still enjoy working with and learning from my students. I have experience teaching 4th and 8th grades, and for the past ten years, I have taught 7th grade language arts and social studies. My teaching has been greatly enhanced by my work with and for the UC Merced Writing Project, where I hold the position of Associate Director.
Technology in my classroom has progressed from a reel-to-reel movie projector, individual slates for student responses, and an overhead projector to a laptop and projector, a document reader, and a class set of Chromebooks. What has not changed throughout the years is what I expect from my students: thinking, being metacognitive, and expressing their ideas through discussions and writing. These activities, rather than tests, continue to give me the best assessment of student learning.
