I am a 7th grade science teacher and science coach at MS 88 in Brooklyn, NY. My school is diverse in every imaginable way, and the challenges that come with that diversity inspire and push me to experiment with new technology, instructional strategies, and modes of facilitating information every day.
My goal is not simply to inspire students with fascinating and relevant content, but to empower students to develop the sustainable practices needed to explore and explain the amazing universe (science), and to actively identify and solve problems (engineering) in their own communities. I will know when I have achieved this goal when students walk out of my class with more questions than they had prior to walking in, and when students actively address such questions through thoughtful experimentation and collaboration, both virtually and in person.
Science is much more than knowing "facts", especially since those "facts" continuously change and evolve in light of new evidence. Science is a way of making meaning of the universe with a global scientific community to enrich and improve our lives. For this reason, I believe the intersection between science and technology is the great equalizer that will provide my students, and people of all social, economic, and ethnic groups, to "learn how to learn", and to make positive changes in their own lives and communities.
Some of the technology that I use to engage, assess, inspire, and build community with and among my students include Google Classroom, Google Apps, Weebly (shonscience.com), Socrative, Mastery Connect, Classroom Dojo, Discovery Education (Tech Book and Streaming), Youtube, Vimeo... and I really look forward to finding and experimenting with more!
