Erik C.'s Profile
This is my 18th year in education, spanning the three states of Washington (2), Alaska (3), and California (13) and including positions as a special education teacher, an on-site coach (classroom management, student engagement and motivation), and BTSA/Induction support provider. Currently, I am a support provider for new teachers in our school district and help deliver training and support to their classrooms as they work to clear their teaching credentials. My background is largely in special education (Mild/Moderate mostly with experience with teaching children with specific learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism, visual impairment, speech and language impairment, and other recognized disabilities through IDEA). I also hold a single subject credential to teach social studies and history to 4th-12th graders. Recently I passed the CPACE examination to gain my certificate of eligibility for an administrative services credential. This month I completed coursework (through San Diego County Office of Education) and applied for Leading Edge Certification for Online and Blended Learning. I am fortunate to be able to combine all of my skill sets into my current position, passing on new learning (especially in the area of educational technology) to new teachers who in turn take this learning and implement it in their own classrooms.
My wife (of nearly 9 years) and I have three children, two of which are in college and the youngest in 1st grade. I enjoy sports, particularly golf, basketball, and baseball. I myself played football and participated as a thrower in track & field in college (Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA). I am presently engaged in reading Eat to Live, by Joel Fuhrman, M.D. to improve my health and to lose the football weight that I have carried for 24 years. I credit this book for helping me to lose 40 pounds in the last three months. I encourage everyone to read Dr. Fuhrman's book, regardless of whether you need to lose weight or not. It is a life-changing text if you will only let it be.
With my new learning and experiences from Leading Edge Certification, I am strongly considering starting a professional blog. I am not sure the exact direction this undertaking will lead me but I enjoy passing on helpful perspectives for the classroom and making teaching a field of enjoyment and passion. It is this persuasion that has led me to participate as a Graphite Accelerated Educator.
