I have been a teacher for 24 years. I began my teaching career teaching Moderate Mentally Impaired at the High School level. When Huntington East High School and Huntington High closed their doors and combined I found myself teaching Special Ed. in the new school. There I taught a variety of subjects on many different levels. While I was teaching at the new HHS I was supplementing my income by becoming a mentor/teacher at Cammack Children's Center. For those of you who aren't familiar with the facility it is a center for locked up troubled youths from in and around our community. While I was there I was offered a position as a classroom teacher for students from several areas lock up facilities. After finally deciding to take the offer I found myself teaching both boys and girls anywhere from elementary school to high school grade level. My classroom was Grant based and lasted 5 wonderful years. It was then I returned to Cabell County Schools and landed a job teaching in the Behavior Disordered classroom at Cammack Middle School. After 5 more years CMS also closed combining with West Middle. My BD classroom was moved to West Middle the year before the combining of the two schools. I decided to stay at CMS and began to Co-teach Science in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Although I loved the students, I was not very happy and I wanted my own classroom.
That's when my former principal from Middle School called me and wanted to know if I would be interested in teaching 5th grade at Guyandotte Elementary. I was a little apprehensive because I had never taught "regular education" before. However, I knew that I wanted a change and more than anything I wanted my own classroom. So I bid on the job and as they say the rest is history.
