For more than five years, Dana Villamagna has reviewed websites and mobile apps for Common Sense Media, observing and reporting on the amazing changes and growth in digital education resources for kids. A journalist and author, Dana has written about everything from politics to travel, but focuses most on children’s health, education, and well-being.
Dana's eclectic blend of life experience reflects her love of media, education, and kids. Among other things, she has: Reported for daily newspapers; homeschooled her three kids for eight years; co-founded a nonprofit tutoring and mentoring program for at-risk teens; created a website for moms of vegetarian and vegan kids; and, most recently, volunteered as a message boards moderator for an online community for tween and teen girls. Dana holds a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Minnesota, and she completed a media leadership fellowship at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies. Dana loves finding new ways to connect with her own kids through learning and having fun with media. Lately, she's been guessing words on the app 4 Pics 1 Word with her teen, admiring her shutterbug daughter's latest digital photography creation, and laughing at FETCH! on the iPad with her son.
