First and foremost I am a father and husband. In addition, I am a 7th & 8th grade language arts teacher. I have been a CRWP Teacher Consultant since 2010, which is a satellite site of the National Writing Project. I see myself as an innovator who implements many forms of technology into the classroom. I teach in a rural school district where I see approximately 120 students on a daily basis.
In 2010 I attended the Chippewa River Writing Project's Summer Institute and ever since I have had a deep passion to improve my students writing. I have co-authored a book titled, Create, Compose, Connect: Reading, Writing, and Learning With Digital tools due out in early March 2014. I have also contributed to two practitioner books dealing with writing and technology. I have presented at the Michigan Reading Association (MRA), the Michigan Council of Teachers of English (MCTE), the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and have delivered many professional development sessions for teachers involving the CCSS and writing across the curriculum. Currently, I am the co-chair for our schools English department.
In my spare time I enjoy blogging about the experiences I have through teaching, writing, and working with other educational professionals. To me, technology is much more than a fun tool to give to students. I feel it is our responsibility as teachers to help guide students how to use technology effectively and responsibly. There are many digital tools available to teachers and students alike that can enhance the learning experience. Furthermore, the uses of digital tools opens up doors for students to present in different modes.
