My Take

This tool helps me motivate my students to practice speaking in Spanish, which they are learning as a new language. My young students get a big kick out of the silly voices and getting to choose their own puppet characters, which allows for lots of speaking practice and repetition before they get bored or fidgety. Not only does everyone get a chance to speak before the class tires of the activity, but the silly characters and settings also encourage students who would otherwise be shy about speaking in front of the class. However, I do find that in order to keep students from getting sidetracked on the app, I need to provide the dialogs for them and record the dialog with each group. Without supervision, students have a tough time avoiding the distractions and temptations of this playful and silly app, but they do have a lot of fun and are practicing their speaking skills!

How I Use It

I use Sock Puppets to encourage Grade 1 students to practice conversational language skills in their Spanish class. I put the students into partnerships and give them dialogs I have written in the target language. They fill in the blanks to personalize their dialogs and practice performing the dialog with their buddy. As a reward, each group gets to record and present their dialog to the rest of the class.
