My Take

The website uses cute animation to draw students into the world of Smarty Ants. Students create their own ant avatar and choose ant friends and a pet dog to help and guide them through the Smarty Ants world. After taking an initial assessment, students are directed to their house and shown how to access various parts of the site. For struggling readers and ELL students, this site is friendly and encouraging. Teachers could use the information to guide reading lessons and differentiate within the classroom. The colorful and cute avatars make learning to read more of a game and would encourage learners to participate in what would otherwise be rote drills or worksheets.

How I Use It

As all students are at different levels, this website would work as an activity for the computer lab as well. This could also be used as a homework activity since access is available anywhere with Internet.
