My Take
I think that this is a great teaching tool to engage once the main lesson has already been introduced. This would not be a good "instead of" direct instruction tool, but I don't think it was ever intended to replace direct instruction.
How I Use It
I use it in both 2nd and 3rd grades to reinforce lesson retention and preparation for higher-level thinking. It is also great for remediation with certain students that might not quite have a conceptual grasp of particular topics.
