Great for communication with students and quick assessments
Students have taken well to using Edmodo for my classes. Again, it allows me to communicate with them outside of the classroom and to post quizzes, links, assignments, etc. It's nice not to hear "I lost the paper!" anymore! It connects via the webpage, but there's also an app available. Messages can be pushed to text or, with the app, you can get notifications. That way, you don't have to go out of your way to check student messages, but they'll just pop up on your phone. Learning and assessment can happen with Edmodo, but the tool itself is just a way to push that out to students, not itself a learning tool.
How I Use It
I have created separate Edmodo classes for each section that I teach. It allows me to send messages to all of my students at once, individual classes, or individual students. It can be used for students to ask clarifying questions, posting reminders after school hours, helpful links for extension or support, quizzes. Students acclimate quickly to the Facebook-like interface and enjoy having chats. As the teacher, you have access to remove any posts you find objectionable, or you can encourage your students to self-moderate, with you having the final say.
