My Take

Edmodo is a great tool to promote communication. It is only as good, however, as the teacher guiding its use. It allows my student with special needs to utilize social media in a safe environment.
When I used this with junior high students we used more the game apps. They especially loved Pixton, the cartoon maker app.
Since so much of our lives are online, this tool makes your classroom more like "real life".

How I Use It

Edmodo is a great tool to promote communication. It is only as good, however, as the teacher guiding its use. It allows my student with special needs to utilize social media in a safe environment.
I began using Edmodo because it solved my digital storage problem. As we got more comfortable with it we started using it for communication, online polls and quizzes. I've just begun using it in conjunction with a PDF reader so that my students can better access the text in the assignments that I post, lessening their need for adult support.
The tech skills they learn using Edmodo are such that they find themselves more comfortable with other software programs and more apt to successfully problem- solve their own tech issues.
The support is quick and reliable, which is important in the beginning.
