Great information resource for teachers.
Community Review for ChooseMyPlate.gov
My Take
I do like using MyPlate.gov as a resource when planning and teaching my nutrition unit to my middle school students. There are many ways to use the information on the website to develop lessons on foods and nutrition and overall healthy eating. The supplementary materials are useful for reviewing material once it has been covered and it all aligns with the MyPlate guidelines. I also love that the website does have multiple languages as I have ESL students in my classes and this allows me to present the material to those students in the same was as I do my English speaking students. While I do like to use MyPlate.gov, I have found some negative aspects of the website that could be improved to better serve children and teachers. MyPlate.gov could update the website more frequently, make it a little easier to navigate, including more activities and materials geared towards middle school age students, and bringing back the calorie tracker feature.
How I Use It
I have used MyPlate.gov as a resource for planning my nutrition unit for middle school students. I have displayed various parts of the website on a projector during lectures, printed off materials as supplementary activities, and tried incorporating the online videos and games from the website into my lessons. The information from the website along with a few of the worksheets have been a great resource and have helped my students understand the concepts behind MyPlate. The videos and games did not interest my students and they became bored and found them to be too juvenile for their age group.
