My Take
I think Book Creator is a great app and website for students to showcase their learning. It's very functional and can be used in a number of ways, by students and teachers. Students could work collaboratively on a book, independently or use a teacher-created template to show their learning throughout a unit of inquiry. I like Book Creator because of its ease, its functionality and it's appeal to all students. When working with different ages it's nice to have the option to either go app-version or Chrome version. With the number of updates that have been released in the past 6 months alone, it's hard to imagine why any educator would pass up a tool like this.
How I Use It
I've used Book Creator with a number of classes and year groups. In the Early Years, I focus mainly on the App version. In one of our units on celebrations, I had my 5-year old students create a book of various celebrations around the world. They added text, images and audio to describe the celebration and why they liked it. We then exported our books and put them in Seesaw to share with the larger community. The layout is pretty easy for students to use and the many options available for designing books allows students to take greater pride in their work. There are some struggles of course with younger students, especially when using shared iPads, but for the most part, the simple interface makes it easy for even the beginners to create something great.
With older students working in 1:1 classroom, the Chrome version is better as they can link to files from their Google Drive. The 40 free books allowed in the one teacher library is hard to manage at times as students want to keep their work without having to delete and start over. I think for that reason alone it is worth investing in a school-wide account.
