1 Hook/Attention Getter

Activity: Creating

Play Tim McGraw's song - "Live Like You Were Dying." After listening to the song, have students reflect on what would be on their "bucket list" if they were near the end of their lives. Have students do a written reflection on the following questions: (1) Where will I be five years from now? (2) Ten years from now? (3) When I'm 40? (4) When I'm 65? (5) Who will help me achieve my goals?

Student Instructions

"You, as a freshman, are beginning your journey into adulthood. Like Odysseus, there will be many experiences that lead to your success. At the end of this unit, you will have set goals, mapped out a plan, and identified people who can support you in your life journey."

Using Comic Life, students will summarize Odysseus' journey in "The Odyssey," highlighting his goals, how he reached those goals, and who mentored/assisted him.  In order to ensure students have the ability to complete this step, the teacher should review summarization skills and model the use of Comic Life with students.

3 Guided Practice

Comic Life

Using either "Journey" or "The End," have students play a game related to reflection and/or the philosophy of setting goals for one's life.

Student Instructions

You will use either "Journey" or "The End" to reflect on the importance of setting goals for one's life.
