Objectives

Students will be able to:

1. Use geolocation tools such as Google Earth and Google Maps to locate and gather information about a specific location.

2. Use movie tools (iMovie, YouTube Creator Lab) to create a digital story

3. Use presentation apps like Keynote or Google Presentation to share out.

1 Hook

Day 1 - Explore

Students are given the prompt: "If money and time where not a concern, where in world would you like to visit and why?" (2-5 minutes quiet think-time) 

Share out (2-4 students)

Instruct students to open Google Earth and search for their location and explore the place they chose to visit.  

2 Direct Instruction/Guided Practice

Day 1 - Explore

Demonstrate the different features available in Google Earth, including but not limited too:

  • Layers (Wikipedia, boundries, Points of Interest)
  • Street View

Teach students to take a screenshot on the iPad (press Home and Power keys simultaneously).

Have students find a 3 or more Points of Interest within their desired destination, visit them in Street View and take one or more screenshots.

Day 2 - Evangalize

Students use the resources gathered the previous session to propagate a presentation about their destination.

Instruct students to open Keynote and demonstrate:

  • How to create a new presentation
  • How to choose a theme
  • How to choose and insert a slide appropriate to the content
  • How to insert an image from the screenshots they saved in the previous lesson
  • How to add and edit text.

Instruct students to create a presentation that will persuade others to join them on a trip to their desired location using pictures and descriptive language.

Day 3 - workday

Students continue to refine their presentions, add additional features (transitions, etc.)

Works-in-progress share outs: Choose volunteers to share out what they have done so far.

Day 4 - Add Video

Students will use YouTube to find a video to use in their presentation. Instruct them to use Creative Commons content only.

 

3 Independent Practice

Students use iMovie and YouTube Creator lab to personalize the CC video they found.
