Word Problem Wednesday
Teacher will provide students with current Rocket Math level to master.
Students will be able to answer Rocket Math Multiplication Fluency sheet with a partner by practicing first and then one minute math drill.
Students will review rounding various numbers from tens, hundreds and thousands place
2 Direct Instruction
Teacher will provide the following question on SMART Board: Ms. Titus’ class is taking a field trip to the zoo. The trip will cost $26 for each student. There are 22 students in her class. What is a good estimate for the cost of the students’ field trip?
Teacher will explain to students that they will show their work for the following word problem on their tablet or computer using the Explain Everything or ShowMe App.
Students will use digital whiteboard (to show estimation and partial product), for an area model, and partial products to represent 32 × 25 in a word problem.
Students will use CUBES to help solve the word problems and use the step by step strategy to help solve the word problem as a class.
3 Guided Practice
Teacher will provide students with 2-digit by 2-digit muliplication worksheet and write the word problems on the SMART Board. Teacher will guide students through first two multiplication word problems while using cubes.
Students will use ShowMe or ExplainEverything App to show their estimation of given 2-digit to 2-digit multiplication word problems. Students will be given Base Ten Blocks Manipulative Blocks using Coolmath4Kids to help with multiplication problems.
4 Independent Practice
Teacher will provide students with 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication worksheet and write the word problems on the SMART Board. Teacher will guide students through first two multiplication word problems while using cubes.
Teacher will provide prior NY State test questions on 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication problems that were given.
Group 1: Students will use ShowMe or Explain Everything app to show their partial product of given 2-digit to 2-digit multiplication word problems. Students will use Partial Product by The Math Learning Center to check their work. Students can also be given tokens to help draw an array for given multiplication problems.
Group 2: Students will be given NY State test questions that show 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication 2 point short response questions. Students will be given a multiplication chart to help with facts if needed.
Teacher will post one word problem on the board in Google Classroom.
Students will be respond to the given multiplication word problem to solve using any of the strategies learned today in the Google Classroom feed. They will also use the CUBES strategy to help them.
