Women in History

Students will learn about significant women in history and will write a biography.

Students will be able to...

  • identify Harriet Tubman, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Sojourner Truth
  • State what the above mentioned women did in history
  • Write a biography about one of the women

1 hook

Activity: Broadcasting
  • Let students know that they'll be able to make their own book
  • Show the students an example of the book and what the contents of their book will be

2 Direct Instruction

Provide students with five sheets of paper, a single hole punch, precut yarn, strip of tape for the end of their yarn

Student Instructions
  1.  Using a single hole punch, make four holes on the left side of your papers
  2. Listen to teacher instruction for making book or watch provided youtube video

3 Guided Practice

Activity: Reading

Allow students to work together using books that contain information about the women of study.

As students find information they will write what find on one page and draw or find a picture of the woman to put on the opposite page.

4 Independent Practice

Activity: Creating

After gathering information on three women students will then choose a woman to write about. The biography is independent work.

5 Wrap up

Activity: Conversing

This is an open discussion where the students can talk about the research process, what they did/didn't like, the most interesting information found, etc.
