What do I do if I encounter cyberbullying?

Students will explore the different ways someone can cyberbully and what to do if it happens to them or someone they know.

I can explain what cyberbullying is and examples of what it looks like.

I can explain various techniques and solutions to try to stop cyberbullying.

1 Engage

I will show this video on cyberbullying to the class to introduce them to the topic that we will be exploring together. 

Questions I would ask the class:

What do you think cyberbullying is?

Why do you think it is important we talk about it?

How does it compare to bullying?

What do you think you could do to stop it?

What would you do if you were being cyberbullied?

How does cyberbullying make the victim feel?

2 Explore

Activity: Other — Researching

I will ask the students to research answers online to the following questions:

What is cyberbullying?

Why do students cyberbully?

Why is it a problem if a student is cyberbullied?

What can you do if you see someone being cyberbullied?

What if you are being cyberbullied?

How do you help a student that is being cyberbullied?

I will explain to the students that we will be creating a website later on in this activity.  To do this, everyone will need a role.  I will ask the students to volunteer for the following roles: Webmaster (in charge of making sure we are using the tool correctly), Editor (in charge of double checking our work to make sure it is free of errors), Referencer (in charge of collecting all the references we got information from), and 6 Team Captains (in charge of one of the 6 questions I asked in the beginning that we will be building pages about).  The rest of the students need to be on teams to contribute to each of the 6 pages.


Student Instructions

The students will find videos, articles, and websites that give ideas and solutions for cyberbullying. They will make a list of the all the different websites and what answers they have found from each using a template I have created (including site, article if applicable, when it was created).  Each group will have one question they will focus on for this part of the lesson.

3 Explain

Activity: Presenting

I will ask the students to share their answers with the class and I so that we can brainstorm together.  They will do this by creating a short Google Slides presentation to go over the main points.  I will write all their ideas on the board.  As the students share their answers, I will elaborate on their answers and add my point of view.  I will also bring up things they may not have found or come up with.

4 Elaborate

I will explain that as a class, we will be creating a cyberbullying website with the information we have collected.  We will then share this website to the students and teachers of the school.  Using the role assignment they received in the beginning, the students will start to create their website together.

Student Instructions

I’d like them to start playing with the tool and working together to find the best content they can find to post on the site.

5 Evaluate

Activity: Assessing

I will explain that I want the students to answer the 6 questions in complete sentences.  They need to have at least 3 sentences with details for each question. I will also explain that I will be evaluating their effort and participation while they are creating our class website.
