What Are the Elements of a Story?

This lesson identifies 5 common aspects of fiction stories.

Students will be able to identify 5 elements of a fiction story:

  • Conflict
  • Character
  • Theme
  • Plot
  • setting

1 Hook- Game

Activity: Conversing

Game-The instructor will lay 5 index cards out on the student’s desk with a story element word written on each card and 5 index cards with the story element word’s definition. The student will be asked to match the correct story element word to the definition of the word.  

2 Direct Instruction

Activity: Debating

Instructor will discuss with the students why it is important to understand the elements of a fiction story and how understanding fiction story elements may help students with comprehension.

3 Guided Practice

Activity: Reading

The instructor and students will read together any fiction short story and identify the story elements of theme, characters, plot, setting, and conflict that exist within the short story.

4 Independent Practice

Activity: Conversing

The students will create their own short stories utilizing the five fiction story elements of theme, characters, plot, setting, and conflict and then present what they create to the class identify their own story elements. 

5 Wrap Up

Activity: Conversing

The instructor and students will discuss the presentations of the story elements and review again the five fiction story element defintions. The instructor will then present the class with an exit card to acess the students comprehension of the given lesson. The students must complete the exit card before leaving class.
