Objectives

• Describe sound as a form of energy.
• Describe how sound waves are caused by vibrations.
• Describe how sound waves are transmitted through a medium.
• Describe how sound, that has been detected by a microphone, can be represented as a wave on a ‘Cathode ray Oscilloscope’ (CRO).
• Critically evaluate a ‘slinky spring’ as a model for sound waves.
• Define amplitude, wavelength and frequency of a sound wave.
• State the units of frequency.
• Identify the amplitude and wavelength of a sound wave on a CRO trace.
• Describe that the pitch of a sound is determined by its frequency.
• Describe that the loudness / volume / intensity of a sound is determined by its amplitude.
• Compare the pitch and loudness of sound waves on a CRO trace.
• Compare the speed of sound in solids, liquids and gases.
• Explain the differences in speed of sound by reference to particles.
• Explain why sound waves cannot travel through a vacuum.
• Label the major components and areas of the human ear.
• Describe how the human ear converts sound waves into electrical signals.

#### 1 Pre-Assess Knowledge

Socrative
Free, Paid
• Create a quiz about waves with some specific questions addressing vocabulary such as amplitude, frequency, wavelength, hertz, decibels, echo, energy transformations, parts of the ear...
• Share Quiz: SOC-13030205
• Run the quiz and analyze the results to see the parts the students are familiar and the ones you need to reinforce the content through the unit
Student Instructions
• Join the room number and complete the quiz

#### 2 Learn

• Presentation about the different concepts of the unit
• Some clip videos and questions related to them

Student Instructions
• Students complete some worksheets after the presentation

#### 3 Hook

Kahoot!
Free, Paid
• Run any of the quizzes available, or the one I made as a way to reinforce/review waves
• Kahoot Title : G8 Sound Revision
Student Instructions
• Log into kahoot.it with GAME PIN (whatever you get)

#### 4 Apply

• Share the instructions sheet "Recorder Investigation" (basically it's an investigation where students using recorders and audacity investigation how the distance from the top to the bottom hole affects the frequency of the wave).
• Explain how audacity works (record a wave, show the first peak...). You can link it with music notes (in case you have students interested in music)
