1 Vietnam War Draft Lesson Plan: Engage

Activity: Exploring

When students enter the class, the teacher will already have cut out paper slips with each student’s D.O.B. The teacher will then pick paper slips at random. The teacher will then give each student draft cards.

2 Vietnam War Lesson Plan: Explore

Activity: Conversing

The teacher will provide a lecture/powerpoint discussing the Vietnam Draft, the draft dodgers, the burning of draft cards, and the counter-protests involved. In addition, the teacher will give examples of the different types of deferments that some men received during the war. Throughout the lecture, the teacher will hand out “deferments” to students at random as a way for students to avoid serving in Vietnam.

3 Vietnam War Lesson Plan: Explain

Teacher will provide a primary/secondary visual source, a video clip such as the one above from PBS, reviewing the draft protests and card burning.

4 Vietnam War Lesson Plan: Elaborate

Activity: Debating

The teacher will expand on the lecture. This is an opportunity for the teacher to discuss the current selective service program, how it works, and why it exists. In addition, the students may be asked whether they can think of any major politicians, business people, athletes, or celebrities that once received a deferment during the Vietnam War.

5 Vietnam War Lesson Plan: Evaluate

Activity: Other — Critically Thinking

The teacher will require for students to complete an “exit ticket” assignment. The assignment allows students to put themselves in the position of having been drafted. 

Student Instructions

The students will be required to write a journal entry. The students will put themselves in the position of having been drafted. The students will express themselves on their feelings towards either receiving or not receiving any kind of deferment. (Optional: The students will then make a decision as to whether they would flee the draft or serve)
