1 Hook

Connecting search using the alphabet in a physical picture dictionary and an online picture dictionary.  https://photographicdictionary.com/letter   Invite students to compare/contrast similarities and differences.

2 Direct Instruction

Introduce vocabulary: search and dictionary

Teacher will demonstrate finding an animal in the online picture dictionary using a projector. Teacher passes out papers with a letter for students to use to look up their animals.

3 Guided Practice

Students will go to their individual computers.  Teacher will demonstrate how the site is organized and guide them to finding their assigned letter.  Teacher and students will choose a category such as animals.  Teacher and students will explore the category and choose an animal that starts with their assigned letter to focus on.

4 Independent Practice

Teacher will gather students to share their work and create a class animal dictionary for the classroom library.

Discussion:  Students will share their work and discuss how they can use the alphabet to find things in an online dictionary.

Student Instructions

Students will look up their animal.  Students will write the name of the animal and draw a picture.
